St Albans Lib Dem cllr speaks out against rail freight terminal
Nuala Webb, district councillor for Park Street, today spoke at a full council meeting of Herts County Council about the sale of land to SEGRO that will allow the much-opposed rail terminal to be built. She was presenting a petition on behalf of resident Andrew Love.
Talking about the legal advice that the council relied upon to come to the decision to sell the land, Nuala said: “We were genuinely shocked to hear that the members who voted to sell the land, did so on a mere summary, without the chance to read all the legal advice and interrogate it themselves. For something so important on one of the biggest issues to come before Council in decades, this is truly shocking.
In a follow-up meeting that Nuala had with Daisy Cooper MP and the leader of Herts CC, it was admitted that the councillors taking the decision didn’t even have sight of the legal advice sought by the council – only an officer’s summary of it.
Daisy will now be asking the council to confirm that in writing and has now submitted Freedom of Information requests to try and get to the bottom of it all.
