Liberal Democrat-led St Albans City and District Council hand over management of Abbey View Athletics Track to preserve vital community asset
Liberal Democrat-led St Albans City and District Council has handed over the management of the Abbey View Athletics Track, in a move that will both preserve the track and facilitate new funding opportunities for its improvement.
The management of the track has been taken over by St Albans Athletics Club. The change of management will allow the club to apply for funding to help rejuvenate the facilities of the centre.
This decision comes after the closure of the Pavilion building, which was deemed unsafe for use.
St Albans City and District Council will provide temporary toilets on site and a container for equipment storage, whilst changing facilities will be provided in the nearby Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre.
Helen Campbell, lead councillor for sport and leisure and deputy leader of the District Council, said:
‘’It is terrific that the closure of the old Pavilion building has led to such a positive outcome. Members of the community will still be able to access the site, whilst the change in management opens the door to new funding opportunities.
‘’We are excited that the St Albans Athletics Club has been able to take ownership of this space, and we are looking forward to seeing the track take a new direction!’’
