Roger Axworthy lives in Holyrood Crescent, in the heart of Sopwell Ward, and knows the local area very well. He believes it is important for a local councillor to live locally, catch the local bus and shop in the local shops.
Over the last four years, Roger has been the District Councillor for Sopwell, and served as the Lib Dem Resources portfolio holder and then as Resources spokesperson. He was able to find extra money to help the elderly and disadvantaged people in St Albans - including many from Sopwell - to access new sheltered housing at Rosewood Court. He also started restructuring the District Council's departments to make them more efficient and save local residents' hard-earned council tax.
Roger is also proud to have been able to get the funding together to start the building of the new Leisure Centre at Westminster Lodge. Despite the Tory/Labour changes that will make it more expensive to run, he is looking forward to the centre being opened soon, as most of the work behind it was done by the Lib Dems last year.
Roger's one disappointment is that the Lib Dems were unable to persuade the Labour group to support the proposal to keep rent increases for council houses at zero for this year. As a result of Labour's failure to support this Lib Dem initiative, rents will rise by 4.9%.
But there is still more to do. Roger wants to continue to be a listening, consultative councillor that works hard all year round for Sopwell and isn't only visible at election time.
