David Yates was born in Birmingham and raised in Devon. He pursued a career in 'Computing', as it was then known, starting his working life in the Civil Service before being lured to London in the early eighties. He soon became a frequent visitor to St Albans; particularly the footpaths and commons in the south of the District.
David's work in card-based payment systems, however, took him much further afield. He has worked in around 60 countries and lived, together with his family, in Australia, Germany, the USA and India. It was on returning from India, in 1999, that the family decided to settle in Park Street, the area that they had previously visited as an escape from London.
A life-long Liberal, David's activities as a youth theatre organiser, trade unionist, residents' association founder and school governor led to him becoming involved with the local Liberal Democrats; in 2004, he was elected to the District Council. He has served the people of Park Street since then, having been re-elected with an increased majority in 2008.
David can often be seen walking his dogs in the area, which keeps him attuned to the latest developments in his neighbourhood. He is particularly concerned with preventing inappropriate development in the south of the District, ensuring that as much of the Green Belt surrounding the villages remains intact. Naturally, he has been very involved in the fight against Helioslough's freight terminal proposals, and has acquired an expert knowledge of planning rules to ensure he's able to stand up for the area he cares so much about.
