Liberal Democrats on the County Council were pleased to see the return of an empty Library building into public use. Cunningham Library was shut in 2007 against much local opposition. It is now being revamped to house the Butterwick Day Centre and for Community use.
County Councillor Rob Prowse commented on the news, "When the Library closed the Liberal Democrats said we would do whatever we could to prevent the community losing this facility. I am delighted that this is now the case and an empty building will be made available for community use. The plan agreed by Cabinet, after I approached St Albans District Council for their assistance, will see along side the Butterwick Day centre, space for Computer Friendly and other community organisations. My thanks go to everyone involved in making this possible."
The building will need extensive remodelling and upgrading to make it suitable for the proposed use. The County Council will work closely with St Albans District Council, Culture and Community Development in order to jointly plan how the community use of the building will be organised to benefit local people.
